Learning FAQs

Here are answers to some questions that are frequently asked about learning visits to the Museum.

How much does it cost?

It's FREE. School visits facilitated by a member of the learning team are subsidised so you don't have to pay anything. If you are planning to leave mini bus or coach in the car park, please let us know and we'll supply you with a parking pass.

What do you expect me to do?

We expect accompanying to join in and participate with the group. We'll do most of the work when you're in the museum and will provide all the materials used in the sessions. Group elements work better if the adults work with the groups to help them stay on task.

Do I need to bring anything?

Some sessions involve work outside, so we ask that you ensure your group is properly attired for the session. We will advise you of the details when you book. This also applies if you wish to have your lunch outside the museum.

How long are the sessions?

How long is a piece of string? Most of the advertised sessions last about 2-2½ hours, so either a morning or an afternoon. We will advise you of the length when booking. We can adjust the session length to suit your needs and include elements from different sessions if you want to come for a whole day. All you need to do is ask.

What is your capacity?

Our education centre has a capacity of 40 people so the simplest answer is about a class at a time in the education centre. We can cater for larger groups by splitting them into smaller sub groups.

The museum is an old building, are the any issues with access?

The museum is fully accessible, but please advise us when booking if any of your students have access issues.

Can I have a Risk Assessment and a pre visit?

We will email appropriate Risk Assessments with your booking, but all Risk Assessments are available in the downloads section. You are welcome to come to the museum for a free pre-visit. Just ask and we’ll arrange it for you.

Do you come to schools?

We try to make use of the Museum as much as possible, so we don’t visit schools. We might consider coming to the school as part of a programme that includes visiting the museum

I want something that's not been mentioned. Can you offer that for me?

Of course we can, depending on what it is. All our sessions look at Royal Marines, so we can't do sessions on things like ancient Egypt. Contact us and we’ll see what we can do.
